About This Event

This class is for our patients delivering babies at The University of Kansas Hospital. Support people and coaches are encouraged to attend. Basic Breastfeeding immediately follows the Prepared Childbirth class.

Basic Breastfeeding will provide you with the essential information you need to breastfeed your baby successfully.

We'll cover:

  • The benefits of breastfeeding
  • Hospital practices that promote breastfeeding success
    • Skin to skin contact
    • Rooming in
    • Baby led feeding
    • Avoiding bottles and supplements
  • How to position your baby for feedings
    • Signs of a good latch
  • Newborn feeding behaviors
    • Sleepy and crying
  • How to know your baby is getting enough to eat
    • Normal weight loss and regain
    • Normal growth patterns for baby
    • Signs of adequate intake and output
  • How to ensure a plentiful milk supply
  • The most common breastfeeding concerns
    • Sore nipples
    • Blocked ducts/mastitis
